3. No one knows today when the Bell was cracked. The crack is a big subject of debate among historians. One theory is the Bell got its first crack in 1752 when it was tested upon its arrival in Philadelphia.

9. The Bell did go on a Revolutionary road trip. In 1777, the Bell was removed from Philadelphia under armed guard and taken to Allentown, Pa., where it was hidden in a church. The fear was the British would melt the Bell and use it to make cannons. It came back to Philadelphia the following year.
BEVs are so good at so many things, we won't recount them here. We have a team of about a dozen employed doing that. Read the stuff we write. Some of it is very good. All of it is free. Let's examine one aspect of vehicle ownership where BEVs may not lead the pack - Long road trips.
There are two additional reasons besides being a good citizen that EV owners stop charging at 80% and they are all related. EVs charge relatively rapidly in the middle of their state of charge, but once past 80% most slow their rate of charging dramatically. This slows down your road trip and the cost can also go up at chargers that have a per-minute charge plan.
Easy Proof That Using EVs on Long Road Trips Is QuestionableIn reality, EVs are not able to drive their maximum range between EV chargers on road trips. They have a meaningfully lower range between charges than the maximum. This casts the use of EVs on long road trips into doubt. Can they be used for long road trips?
It is suggested by health experts that you do not leave your engine running as there is a risk of poor air quality and potential carbon monoxide poisoning (not likely but possible). Most campers like to leave a small crack in their windows for fresh air and to prevent condensation building up inside the car.
I would also suggest investing in a small lantern for some ambient lighting and for when you need a larger space lit up. My husband and I LOVE the Black Diamond Apollo Lantern and have traveled with it on countless road trips (local and overseas), backpacking trips, and hiking adventures. A small carabiner or string can come in handy for hanging lanterns around your car.
The emergence of crack in the spring of 1986 and a flood of lurid and often exaggerated press accounts of inner-city crack use ushered in a period of intense public concern about illegal drugs, and helped reinforce the impression that drug use was primarily a minority problem. Enforcement of the nation's drug laws at the street level focused more and more on poor communities of color. In the mid- to late-1980s, many cities initiated major law enforcement programs to deal with street-level drug dealing. "Operation Pressure Point" in New York was an attempt to rid the predominantly Hispanic Lower East Side of the drug trade. Operation Invincible in Memphis, Operation Clean Sweep in Chicago, Operation Hammer in Los Angeles, and the Red Dog Squad in Atlanta all targeted poor, minority, urban neighborhoods where drug dealing tended to be open and easy to detect.
In the 1980s, with the emergence of the crack market, skin color alone became a major profile component, and, to an increasing extent, black travelers in the nation's airports and found themselves the subjects of frequent interrogations and suspicionless searches by the DEA and the U.S. Customs Service. These law enforcement practices soon spread to train stations and bus terminals, as well.
Cave-ins are jagged holes with a deep void, where the pavement has cracked apart and fallen into a deep empty space without a solid bottom. Cave-ins are larger and deeper than potholes and are not geometrically shaped like a defective street cut. Cave-ins are typically caused by problems with the underground infrastructure. Often, large pieces of pavement can be seen in the hole. NYC DOT inspects reported cave-ins and, as warranted, sends the report to Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) or another utility to make a repair.Report a cave-in on a street via NYC311 Report a cave-in on a highway via NYC311
Street hardware may be sunken, cracked, missing, tilted, collapsed or may be above or below grade thereby preventing a smooth riding condition. Typically, a NYC DOT inspector will review the defect. If actionable, NYC DOT will issue a corrective action report to the appropriate utility owner.Report cracked, missing or otherwise defective street hardware online to NYC311
If your windshield needs to be repaired or replaced due to a chip or crack, you can select the shop of your choice to make the repairs. For your convenience, we have partnered with vendors that can facilitate your glass repair or replacement. When you select one of our partner vendors, they will handle your claim and guarantee your repairs for as long as you own the vehicle.
Windshields are specially designed to ensure the safety of passengers and drivers even if extreme impact causes them to chip, crack or shatter. They have two layers of glass laminated together. If one layer of glass breaks, the laminate and the inside layer of glass hold the windshield together, keeping pieces of glass from injuring occupants of the car or falling on the road.
Another factor to consider when deciding to drive with a broken windshield, call for onsite repair or have the car towed, are the relative state laws. In Pennsylvania, there are legal restrictions on driving with damaged glass related to the size and type of crack.
To ensure the safety of everyone on the roads, it is illegal to drive with shattered glass or glass that has sharp edges exposed. Drivers cannot operate vehicles if the windshield has any crack or discoloration that obstructs or interferes with their ability to see clearly.
Most small chips can be repaired, independently of the shape, and there are products available to help prevent cracks from spreading. One of the most common problems with cracks in glass, however, is that they tend to spread.
In the case of windshields, chips and cracks create weak points in the glass that will likely spread due to a few factors. Moisture, flex from the body of the vehicle as it goes over bumps and dips in the road, changes in temperature that cause the glass to expand and contract all put stress on the glass. This additional stress causes the glass to shatter and the condition of the windshield will continue to get worse the longer you wait to get it fixed.
A shattered windshield must be replaced; large cracks or those that continue to spread will also likely require the glass to be substituted entirely. By law in Pennsylvania, replacement windshield glass must be of the same kind and quality, and any repairs should restore vehicle to its original state.
When the bell arrived in Philadelphia in 1752, it cracked on its first test strike. Two local craftsmen, John Pass and John Stow, twice cast a new bell using metal from the cracked English bell. They also added more copper, to make the bell less brittle, and silver, to sweeten its tone. The recast behemoth weighed in at 2,000 pounds: 70 percent copper, 25 percent tin, and a scattering of lead, zinc, gold, silver, and arsenic.
There's no one widely accepted story for how the recast bell got its now-famous crack. One account asserts that the bell fractured during Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette's visit to the City of Brotherly Love in 1824. Another insists that it cracked while tolling a fire warning later that year. Craftsmen tried to prevent further damage by boring out hairline cracks on the bell, keeping them from expanding dangerously.
The cause that stuck (at least according to official city reports) was that the Liberty Bell was irreparably damaged in 1846, when Philadelphia Mayor John Swift ordered the bell rung to commemorate George Washington's birthday. The bell had been repaired earlier that year when a thin crack started throwing off the sound of the bell, but after it cracked again, it hasn't been rung since.
"The old Independence Bell rang its last clear note on Monday last in honor of the birthday of Washington and now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and dumb. It had been cracked before but was set in order of that day by having the edges of the fracture filed so as not to vibrate against each other...It gave out clear notes and loud, and appeared to be in excellent condition until noon, when it received a sort of compound fracture in a zig-zag direction through one of its sides which put it completely out of tune and left it a mere wreck of what it was."
The most common cause of damage to your towed vehicle is cosmetic. These can include scratches to the paint, dents, damage to the wheel and tires, and cracks in your windshield from flying debris on the road.
