Over the years my interest in medals remained, though the emphasis drifted from the historic to the artistic. Having become accustomed to the well-catalogued (at least to 1760) British series, I was soon faced with the realization that there were relatively few books on American medals, and that most of those concerned early historical issues. In fact, the major references for twentieth-century medals at that time were the 1911 edition of the International Exhibition of Contemporary Medals catalogue (Baldwin 1911), and the 1923 catalogue of the National Sculpture Society's Exhibition of American Sculpture (National Sculpture Society 1923), both still indispensable. Fortunately, the late '70s and early '80s saw the rise of several firms dealing in art medals, including Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Johnson and Jensen with their almost marathon auctions, and World Art Medals, run by Bob Levin.
